Administrative/Biographical History:
The gold rushes to the Inland Empire districts of Iditarod and Ruby reached their peak
between 1910 and 1912. Prospectors traveled by steamship to the Alaskan coast, and then by
smaller craft up the Yukon, Innoko, or Kuskokwim Rivers.
Scope and Content Description:
One black-and-white photograph, measuring 4 ¾” x 6 ¾”, mounted to board and adhered to
glass, showing the crowd on the dock in Seattle prior to the departure of the steamboat S.S.
Victoria for Nome. Written in ink on the image are the phrases “S.S. Victoria to Nome, Alaska”
and “Iditarod or Bust, Seattle June 2, 1910.” In pencil on the mount, the following description
is written: “S.S. Victoria at Pier #2 Seattle about to sail for Nome, Alaska, nearly 5,000 people
see off. The ‘password’ is Iditarod or bust (630 passengers) (new diggings). In the Bering Sea
ice for 18 days. Very rough after 2
nd
day out. All sick except for crew. Storm [illegible] Bering
Sea [illegible]. Return to Seattle July 11, voyage of 30 days.”
