Administrative/Biographical History:
John Broostrom married Ethel Koehler in 1946, around the time the couple settled in
Anchorage. John worked as a mechanic. Ethel was a self-employed seamstress; she died
August 7, 1998. John died April 22, 2015.

Scope and Content Description:
The collection consists of 306 color 35mm slides and 29 photographic prints (one tinted)
created or collected by Anchorage resident John “Jack” Broostrom. Twenty-seven of the prints
are black-and-white snapshots, possibly taken by F.J. Goodman, a barber, on a visit to
canneries on Kodiak Island, probably in the 1940s. The slide series includes images of the 1964
Alaska Earthquake, the Broostrom house in Anchorage, and the couple’s activities in
Southcentral Alaska. For more information, see Detailed Description of Collection.

Arrangement: Arranged by format and chronologically. Contents of original housing (carousel
or box) maintained; items arranged chronologically within sections.

research, publication, and other uses. Written permission must be obtained from the

purchased the Broostrom house as-is in 2013.

Duplicates of prints not retained. Album of Ethel Koehler Broostrom photographs (Iowa, 1941)
transferred to Iowa State Historical Society. Souvenir photographs from Seattle restaurants
