Administrative/Biographical History:
Milo H. Fritz (1909-2000) set up a practice in Ketchikan, Alaska, in 1940. He served in World
War II as a command surgeon for the 11th Air Force. After the war, Fritz relocated to New
York, but in 1947 returned to Alaska to investigate blindness among Alaska Native children.
Fritz served in the Alaska Legislature, representing Anchorage in the State House in 1966 and
1972, and Anchor Point in 1982.1

Scope and Content Description:
Milo Fritz was a physician in Anchorage at the time of the Alaska Earthquake of 1964, also
called the Good Friday Earthquake. The letter, dated July 2, 1964, recounts his experience of
the earthquake and its aftermath, describing in particular many of the cases that came into the
hospital in the moments following the disaster. Fritz also held medical clinics in Fairbanks and
Sitka after the earthquake, and describes his experiences in those towns.

Item removed from Collections accession file for Fritz Collection and transferred to archives in
April 2013.

Separated Materials
The Estate of Elizabeth Berry Fritz transferred all of her “Alaska art, papers, photographs,
documents and historical material” to the Anchorage Museum in 2009. Objects were cataloged
as 2009.007. The bulk of the archival material was transferred to University of Alaska,
Anchorage (Betsy and Milo Fritz family papers, HMC-1072).
