Administrative/Biographical History:
William Jennings Bryan Swank was born in Preble County in Southwestern Ohio in 1896. In
about 1953, he moved to Anchorage and worked as a civilian electrician for the military until
the late 1960s.

Scope and Content Description:
The collection consists of 1004 slides and 103 images on 35mm color strip negatives, depicting
primarily Anchorage and Alaskan radar sites including King Salmon and Sitkinak. Also depicted
are, Shemya, Valdez, Fairbanks, Bethel, Unalakleet, Kotzebue, Ketchikan, Juneau, Honolulu
(Alaska), Katmai, Fort Greely, Sparrevohn, Nome, Cordova, and Copper Center, as well as the
1964 Alaska Earthquake, Anchorage Fur Rendezvous, Alaska Highway, Alaska Natives, aircraft
accidents, 719th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, volcanoes, animals, Alaska Railroad,
dogsledding, and hunting and fishing. For more information, see Detailed Description of

Arrangement: Arranged by format into two series: 1. 35mm slides. 2. 35mm negatives. Slides
sorted by donor; category labels and arrangement maintained.

Restrictions on Access: The collection is open for research use.

Physical Access: Original items in fair to good condition. Light box may be used for viewing
transparencies.

The Anchorage Museum is the owner of the materials and makes available reproductions for
research, publication, and other uses. Written permission must be obtained from the
