Series Description

Series 1. Correspondence; 1940-1945.

About 50 items.

This series consists of letters from Noble Webb during his time as a soldier in World War
II, and one letter to Noble Webb from fellow soldier, Kermit Beougher. The letters are
arranged in chronological order, and the dates span December 24, 1940 through
September 8, 1945. From 1940 through the summer of 1942 the letters were written from
Noble Webb to Mr. and Mrs. Ira Nichols in Fillimore, Indiana. After 1942, the letters
were written specifically to their daughter, Lela Nichols, also of Fillimore, Indiana. The
letters describe Webb’s life in Alaska and Seattle, Washington, as a soldier, but are
limited in subject due to the censor restrictions.

Series 2. Photographs; [1940-1945].

About 30 items, numbered B04.18.1-29.

This series consists of black and white photographs from Webb’s time as a soldier in
World War II. The photographs have been kept in the order in which they were received
by the archives. Details about the contents of the photographs are occasionally mentioned
in Webb’s letters. Among the photographs are pictures of Webb’s excursions in Alaska
during the war years, of military life, and of local wildlife. His dog “Blackie” pictures
prominently among the items. There is a photograph of Noble with his family and Lela
Nichols (B04.18.1).

Series 3. Publication Clippings; ca. 1940s.

2 items.

The two clippings consist of the first page of a color magazine article entitled “We
Defend Alaska” and a newspaper clipping, “Noble Webb Tells of Life in Alaska,” which
includes excerpts from two January 1944 letters home to his parents. Both are undated
and were mixed in with Webb’s letters.
