Scope and Contents

The McDonald collection consists of photographs of the McDonald family,
Emerelda, Patrick James, and Merifee as well as several photographs of the Anchorage
area. Photographs of Anchorage include the Town Site, House construction, Ship Creek,
the first water system in Anchorage, the first trees set on the Anchorage Town Site, the
McDonalds home, “Montanegros” building shelters after arriving at Ship Creek in 1915,
and the Mt. McKinley Fox Farm and exhibit at the Anchorage Fair.
People in the collection include F. B. Cannon, H.H. Sharp, Percy Pitsford, Frank
Brown, Mrs. Tharp, and Mrs. Wilmison. Also in the collection are several photographs
of H.H. Sharp and Patrick James McDonald with a horse team at McDonald Glacier, the
grandstand at a Ballgame in Knik, a Sod house, and the “First piece of rolling stock on
A.R.R at Ship Creek, 1915.” The photographs were taken by Patrick James McDonald
and Thwaites. In the collection is also the announcement of Emerelda Longmire and
Patrick James McDonald’s marriage in the Cook Inlet Pioneer and Knik News.
Patrick James McDonald prospected in the Willow Creek District (Peters Creek),
and later with his wife ran the Mt. McKinley Fox Farm. McDonald worked at the ARR
power plant until 1929. They later moved to Fairbanks.
