A nchorage Times Iditarod Collection
B9 5 .2 7

The A nchorage Times Iditarod collection was donated to the museum in 1 9 9 5 by a
Catholic priest who had (quite fortunately) found it in a dumpster behind the
A nchorage Times building. It contains negatives, prints, and articles produced by
the Anchorage Times between 1 9 7 3 and 1 9 9 0 on the subject of the annual
Iditarod sled dog race. The collection has heavy coverage of the Iditarod from its
founding in 1 9 7 3 through 1 9 8 7 . The following three years’ material is sparse.

The collection for each year includes the following: contact print pages paired with
the negatives from which they were made; various sizes of prints, the majority of
which came from negatives included in the collection; and photocopies of articles
published in the Times, paired with the original newspaper clipping. Some years
also include 3 5 mm color slides. Most years through 1 9 8 7 include photo portraits
of each musher who ran the race.

Each image does not have an individual accession number. Rather, the collection is
numbered by year. Thus, all of the material for 1 9 7 3 is 9 5 .2 7 .1 9 7 3 ( 9 5 .2 7 .7 3 );
the material for 1 9 7 4 is 9 5 .2 7 .1 9 7 4 (9 5 .2 7 .7 4 ), and so on. If any images from
the collection are to be used, please note what format the original was in. This will
make it much easier on A rchives staff if additional copies are needed.
