Administrative/Biographical History:
Charles R. Nelson was a photographer in Anchorage, Alaska, and also proprietor of the Inlet
Hotel. A photograph taken by Sidney Hamilton shows Red Nelson along Turnagain Arm in
October 1944 (B1989.016.73).
Scope and Content Description:
The collection consists of 147 black-and-white photographs and one colored photograph. Many
are portraits of individuals, including Evelyn and Stanley McCutcheon, Inez and Phyllis
Thomasson, Mollie Chamberlain Tryck, Mollie Hannon, Bertha Van Zanten Porter, and others.
Also depicted are Nelson’s Sand Lake property, Anchorage scenes including parades,
buildings, and people, and images of boats and airplanes.

Acquisition and Appraisal Information
Donated by Shannon Garrett, who found the photographs in Nelson’s cabin after a fire.
Approximately 70 photographs were discarded at the time of processing due to water and
smoke damage.
