B73.57. Inventory.

Frank Ivan Reed was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1872. Frank came to Nome during the gold rush
in 1900 and worked for the Solomon Dredging Company. Frank met his first wife, Pauline Hovey
(born 1883 in Munson, Ohio), onboard the ship to Nome, and the two were married four years later.
The couple lived in Nome until 1912. Om 1913, Frank began mining in the Cache Creek area,
northwest of Talkeetna. In 1915, the Reeds moved to Anchorage, where Reed was involved in many
businesses. Reed was involved in the Anchorage Lumber Company, and the Anchorage Hotel, which
Pauline managed. Reed was also the founder of Anchorage Light and Power Company and also
developed the first hydroelectric plant at Eklutna Lake in 1929. Pauline was the Republican National
Committeewoman for Alaska until her death in 1934. Frank Reed died in 1944.

The John Watson Webb Collection consists of 24 photographs. The photographs are 11 x14 and in
black and white. The photographs are of Mount McKinley and other wilderness travels made by the
Webb family. The subjects include scenic shots of mountains, hunting and Alaskan animals, and one
image showing Frank I. Reed with two other unidentified men. The photographer of the majority of the
images is John Watson Webb, with others taken by Mr. Waddell.

This collection was donated to the Anchorage Museum by Mrs. Frank I. Reed (June Briffett?) in 1973.
