Administrative/Biographical History:
Wally Wellenstein (1921-2012) was born in Albany, Minnesota. He enlisted in the U.S. Army
and served with the Army Transportation Office in Juneau from 1942 to 1945. After the war,
he obtained his degree in architecture from the University of Minnesota and returned to
Alaska in 1949 to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In 1952, he left the service of
the Corps of Engineers to work in the private sector; in 1962, he opened his own architectural
firm. He was very active with the Anchorage Ski Club (ASC) and designed the ski lodge the club
erected at Arctic Valley in 1952.

Scope and Content Description:
The collection consists of 690 35mm slides, 19 black-and-white photo prints, 2 digital photo
prints, and one news clipping created or collected by Wally Wellenstein. The images mostly
depict outdoor recreation in Alaska, including skiing, hunting, fishing, and bush flying, as well
as various towns and villages that Wellenstein visited during the 1950s and 1960s. For more

Restrictions on Access: The collection is open for research use.

Physical Access: Original items in good condition.

Technical Access: No special equipment is needed to access the materials. A light box may be
used for viewing transparencies.

The Anchorage Museum is the owner of the materials and makes available reproductions for
research, publication, and other uses. Written permission must be obtained from the
Anchorage Museum before any reproduction use. The Anchorage Museum does not
