Administrative/Biographical History:
John Snelling is a collector of Alaskan imagery.

Scope and Content Description:
The collection consists of 473 color 35mm slides from several discrete collections, all
purchased by John Snelling.
Images 1-195 are from a trip to Alaska made in 1987; the photographer traveled by rail
into the Interior, by bus down the Alaska Highway, and by ship through the Inside
Passage. The collection consists of a two-carousel slide show of selected images, with a
list of captions.
Images 196-243 are from a trip to Alaska made in 1975. The photographer left
Vancouver and traveled the Inside Passage to Ketchikan, Wrangell, Skagway, and
Juneau, with a side trip on the White Pass & Yukon Route to Lake Bennett.
Images 244-269 are a collection of photographs taken in the 1950s, in Fairbanks, Circle,
Fort Yukon, Portage, and Eklutna, as well as scenes from a cruise on the Tanana River.
Most bear captions with time of day, weather, and photograph exposure notes.

Collection 4 includes images 270-279, taken in Kotzebue in September 1974, as well as
images 280-300, taken in Kodiak in October 1978.
Images 301-304 were taken on an Alaska Highway trip in June 1981, and show the
trading store in Tok, a state border sign, and the start of the highway sign in Dawson.
Images 305-473 were all taken in 1978 on a trip to Alaska, including a ride on the
White Pass & Yukon Route railroad, travel up the Alaska Highway to Anchorage and the
Matanuska Valley, and flights to communities off the road system.
