Administrative/Biographical History:
Tron G. Andersen (born Trond Andersen) was born in Oslo, Norway in 1907 and moved
to Portland, Oregon, with his family at the age of six. He was educated at Roosevelt High
School and Whitman College. He moved with his wife and children to Spenard, Alaska, in July
1945, and worked for the U.S. Army as a warehouseman, storekeeper, and surveillance
examiner. He also had a business selling lots. He was deeply involved in community life in
Spenard, and was one of the organizers of the Spenard Social and Civic Club. He died in
Portland, Oregon, in 1955.
During his time in Alaska, Tron became a member of the Cook Inlet Historical Society
and began work on a manuscript of historical sketches on the settlements of Knik, Tyonek,
Beluga, Ladd Station, Aurora, Dutton, Hope, and Sunrise. He also researched the early history
of the mail service in Alaska. A copy of the 9-page memorial piece, “Tron Andersen: an
appreciation,” an offprint from Spenard Life, is available in the collection accession file.

H.W. Nagley (1875-1966) opened a store at Susitna Station in 1907, a store at
McDougal in 1914, and a store in Talkeetna in 1920.

O.G. Herning (1868-1947) was manager of the Klondike and Boston Gold Mining
Company, Expedition #4, and owner of the Knik Trading Company of Knik and Wasilla.
G.W. Palmer (1855-1930) built the first store in the Matanuska Valley prior to 1898. He
owned a store at Knik from 1908-1918.
F.B. Cannon (1861-1923) was one of the first residents of Knik, and owned and
operated the Pioneer Hotel there.

Scope and Content Description:
The collection consists of materials created or collected by Tron Andersen during the course of
his research into the history of settlements in the Cook Inlet region of Alaska. It includes
Andersen’s personal papers, research notes, and manuscripts, as well as primary source
materials that he collected, such as business records, correspondence, maps, and ephemera.
There are 58 images in the collection (photographic prints, nitrate negatives, and black-and-
white and color postcards), predominately taken by O.G. Herning. The bulk of the primary
source material pertains to the businesses run by H.W. Nagley at Susitna, Knik, and McDougal.

Materials. Textual Materials further arranged into: a. Andersen Papers and 2016 Addendum.
