Administrative/Biographical History:
Floyd W. Sheelor took many panoramic photographs of Alaskan scenes in the period circa
1916-1923. He was a native of Nebraska. The University of Alaska Fairbanks holds a collection
of 22 Sheelor panoramas (USUAFV6-41) including images of Ketchikan, Wrangell, Juneau,
Haines, Skagway, Valdez, Cordova, Latouche, Seward, Anchorage, Saint Michael, Nulato, and
Fairbanks, as well as Mount Foraker/Mount McKinley, reindeer, glaciers, Dawson City in
Yukon Territory, and hydraulic mines of the Yukon Gold Company.

Scope and Content Description:
One black-and-white panoramic photograph measuring 60.5” x 12”of Fairbanks, Alaska, in
October 1915, showing the Chena River waterfront and bridge. The photographer’s vantage
was from next to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church looking across to the Northern
Commercial Co. building and docks.

Restrictions on Access: The collection is open for research use.


Physical Access: Original item in fair condition. Several tears repaired with tape. A photo
reproduction was made by the Museum and may be substituted for access.

Technical Access: No special equipment is needed to access the materials.
