TITLE: Monroe B. Goldberg Collection

COLLECTION NUMBER: B2009.001

OVERVIEW OF THE COLLECTION

Dates: 1942-1945

Extent: 1 linear foot

Language and Scripts: The collection is in English.

Name of creator(s): Monroe B. Goldberg; C. N. R.; G. Morris Taylor; Hunt; Rudy

Administrative/Biographical History:
Monroe B. Goldberg was born in Washington, D.C. on 11 January 1918. Before serving in the
United States Army, he gained a Master of Education degree from George Washington
University and taught science at a D.C. high school. Goldberg married his life-long wife,
Gertrude, on 21 June 1942. He enlisted in the Army later that year on 23 September and
became a Private in the Branch Immaterial – Warrant Officers department. Goldberg attended
basic training and university in Gainesville, Florida where he received a Master of Chemical
Engineering degree.

Goldberg was stationed in Alaska at Fort Richardson and Adak from 1943 to 1945; and appears
to have worked as a chemical engineer. He was discharged from the Army in 1945, and went
on to work as a teacher until 1951; then as a chemist in the U.S. Naval Ordinance Lab; and
finally as a chemical engineer for General Electric and General Instruments.

These photographs were discovered in Goldberg’s Long Island, NY home after his death on 23
July 1981 by his surviving family members. The photographs were never discussed with
Goldberg’s family, but they recall him regaling them with stories of ping pong competitions and

2
tales of his dark room and photography hobby while stationed on Adak. At the time of
donation, Goldberg was survived by his wife Gertrude and their two sons.

Scope and Content Description:
This collection consists of 523 photographs and postcards that were taken or collected by
Goldberg while serving in the U.S. Army. The majority of the images are of Alaska although
there are a few that depict a base in California, as well as a number of images of British
Columbia, Canada. The collection originally consisted of two photograph albums and a manila
envelope of loose images, however only the smaller album is still intact. The photographs
depict Adakian and Alaskan scenery; animals; flowers; base installations; soldiers; military
vehicles and planes; and religious buildings such as the base chapel and synagogue. For more
information, see Detailed Description of Collection.

Arrangement:
Collection was previously arranged by Monroe Goldberg or family members, and the
photographs were contained in two albums and one envelope containing loose images. The
order of all photographs has been maintained when known. Photographs removed from the
larger album were ordered from left-to-right and top-to-bottom of each page.

CONDITIONS GOVERNING ACCESS AND USE

Restrictions on Access: The collection is open for research use.

Physical Access: Original items are mostly in good condition. Some photographs show glue and
wear damage, but are still in usable shape. There are two sets of photographs that are unable
to be fully separated without damage, these are: .495 and .522, and .504 and .523; only .495
and .504 are able to be fully viewed at this time due to preservation conditions. The twenty-
four images that were returned to the family are available only in a digital format; please see

ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Acquisition and Appraisal Information:
Collection was donated in January 2009 by the creator’s sons: Robert H. Goldberg and Gerald N.
Goldberg.

Processing Note:
In 2009, the entire collection was scanned and a total of twenty-four photographs were
returned to the family upon their request. The larger album originally consisted of a blue U.S.
Army photograph binder with a sticker reading ‘Alaska Aleutian Interlude’ on its side. This
album was deconstructed in 2015, as a large portion of the photographs were detached from
the pages, and the paper was of extremely acidic quality. The order of the photographs has
been maintained. One duplicate image was discarded due its poor quality and subject
repetition. A CD of images of the large album’s pages that document original photograph
locations within the album is housed in the collection accession folder.
