TITLE: Arthur Watrous Collection

COLLECTION NUMBER: B1998.027

OVERVIEW OF THE COLLECTION

Dates: circa 1930-1940

Extent: 5 boxes; 2.2 linear feet

Language and Scripts: The collection is in English.

Name of creator(s): Arthur Watrous, H.W. Steward

Administrative/Biographical History:
Everett and Myrtle Watrous worked as Bureau of Indian Affairs teachers in Point Hope starting
in the spring of 1930. Son Arthur was born October 5, 1930, in Kotzebue. Everett and Myrtle
worked for the BIA until 1946, and were stationed in Akutan, Karluk, and Wrangell. During
their stay in Alaska, Everett took many photographs and then used them to illustrate talks
back East.

Scope and Content Description:
The collection consists of 77 glass lantern slides (all but two hand-tinted), 684 nitrate
negatives, and 184 black-and-white prints (one real photo postcard) depicting Point Hope,
King Island, Akutan, Little Diomede, and other villages in western Alaska, circa 1930-1940.
Included are many images of subsistence hunting, traditional boats, dwellings, and social
activities, including a funeral at Point Hope. There are also many images documenting work at
the Akutan whaling station, which operated until 1939. There are three images of the sinking
of the freighter Anyox. Of interest in terms of photographic process, some original envelopes
contain notes to assist in creating colored glass lantern slides from the original black-and-
white negatives (2.118, 2.396, 2.413, 2.427, 2.474, 2.544, 2.660). Forty small note cards,

probably prompts for lectures, are housed with the photographic prints. For more
information, see Detailed Description of Collection below.

Arrangement: Arranged into three series: 1. Glass lantern slides. 2. Nitrate negatives. 3. Prints.
