Administrative/Biographical History:
Bertel A. Wennerstrom was born in Southbridge, Massachusetts in 1903, and came to
Anchorage in 1920. He went to work for the Alaska Railroad as a laborer in the materials yard.
He also worked as janitor and mail clerk, manager of the employment office, and was chief
accountant – the position he held upon retirement after forty-four years of service with the
Railroad. Bert married Violet Mae Elliott in 1927. Violet Mae was born in Seattle, Washington
in 1905 and came to Anchorage in 1916 with her family. Known by her middle name, “Mae”
worked for the Alaska Railroad as a bookkeeper from 1922 until 1929 and in later years was a
stenographer for the Superior Court and the United States Department of Justice. She also
held jobs as medical secretary to Dr. Harold S. Sogn and as legal secretary to attorney Paul F.
Robison in 1956. Bert and Violet lived at 415 West 8th Avenue for fifty years.

Bert was also active with the Loyal Order of Elks and the Pioneers of Alaska. A history buff, he
served as a member of the boards of the Cook Inlet Historical Society, the Anchorage
Historical and Fine Arts Museum and the Anchorage Fine Arts Commission. He and Mae were

King and Queen Regent for the 1969 Fur Rendezvous. Bert died in 1988, and Mae died in
1996.1

Scope and Content Description:
The collection consists of 265 photographs, as well as architectural drawings and documents
pertaining to coal mining at Eska and Chickaloon. The first 35 images illustrate the “Report of
the Mining Department, A. E. C.,” for 1921. Numerous images are from the Alaskan
Engineering Commission series documenting the construction of the Alaska Railroad. There
are also several images from the filming of the motion picture The Chechahcos in 1924; images
documenting fishing, probably in Cook Inlet; and early commercial stock photography of
Alaskan scenes. For more information, see Detailed Description of Collection.
