COLLECTION NUMBER: B1983.146

OVERVIEW OF THE COLLECTION

Extent: 434 items

Language and Scripts: The collection is in English.

Name of creator(s): Sydney Laurence, Alberta Pyatt, Winter & Pond, Eric A. Hegg, Chauncey
F. Peterson, Schallerer, John E. Thwaites, Andrews, Photocraft, C. P. Johnston Co., Scenic
Photo Publishing Co., H. A. Ives, M.P. Roark, O. Kennedy, G. L.

Administrative/Biographical History:
Sydney Mortimer Laurence was born October 14, 1865, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of an
English couple. After many years abroad, Laurence became renowned for his painting
throughout France and England, but in 1904, at the age of 38, Laurence left his wife and two
young sons in England and moved to Alaska. In 1915, when Anchorage was being founded,
Laurence established his studio in the lobby of the Anchorage Hotel and took an upstairs
apartment. Doing business as The Sydney Laurence Co., he engaged in commercial
photography as well as painting. He accepted a contract with the Alaska Engineering
Commission to photograph the early Anchorage town site and railroad construction, but it is not
clear which photos were taken under contract for the AEC and which are for Laurence’s own
studio. He is responsible for recording many of the earliest images of Anchorage, from its days
as a tent city, to the public auction of city lots, to the first snowfall on the new city's main street.

The life dates of Alberta Pyatt (née Bouthillier) are not currently known. Alberta worked as an
assistant to Sydney Laurence in his photography business, the Sydney Laurence Company, in
Anchorage, Alaska. Pyatt’s extant photos include people, views, and activities from the
Anchorage area during the years 1915 and 1916.
